Artist Statement

Born in a small town in Peninsula of Malaysia, I moved to the UK awhile back and have reside in Brighton. I have a passion to be an artist at a very young age. I am a self-taught painter and have been very aggressive in my pursue to achieving what I think is painterly through continuous exploration and dedication to understanding and studying art as a whole. I began my journey exploring still life, however quickly found myself drawn painting en plein air and it’s techniques. I am part of the collaborative Southern Plein Air Group (SPA).

As a self-taught painter, my painting techniques have been influenced from a mix of traditional atelier practices and pleinair painting techniques. While rooted in observational and figurative, my style incorporates contemporary techniques, blending traditional methods with modern sensibilities. I am inspired by artists such as Walter Sickert, Gwen John and Edouard Vuillard. I am also inspired by many current emerging/established artists that share the same motivation in painting. My painting style sits within observational and figurative, where the focus is on capturing an atmosphere and narration through my authentic observations.

My work is rooted in quiet observation, shaped by an introverted sensibility and a deep engagement with the subtleties of everyday life. I construct narratives and conceptual frameworks through a personal, perspectival lens, examining the relationships between subjects and objects as they unfold in space and time. My practice is shaped by a deep engagement with spatial memory and emotional resonance, developed over years of navigating my identity as a Malaysian within the English culture and environment. Through my passion and experiences for mental healthcare, I draw to the understated and often overlooked elements of lived experience, for example those moments of stillness, ambiguity, and quiet transformation that lingers within our minds. I aim to foster contemplative engagement, encouraging viewers to reflect on the subtle interplay between place, perception, and presence.

I am grateful to everyone who has encouraged, inspired and motivated me in this painting journey.

A special thank you to my dear friends Elliot Roworth and Stephen Hawkins for introducing me to the techniques of plein air painting and for their constant encouragement. And to Max White and Steward Beckett for the continuous motivation and camaraderie that has made this art journey all the more meaningful.
