Artist Statement
Born in a small town in Peninsula of Malaysia, I moved to the UK awhile back and have reside in Brighton. I have a passion to be an artist at a very young age. I am a self-taught painter and have been very aggressive in my pursue to achieving what I think is painterly through continuous exploration and dedication to understanding and studying art as a whole. I began my journey exploring still life, however quickly found myself drawn painting en plein air and it’s techniques. I am part of the collaborative Southern Plein Air Group (SPA).
As a self-taught painter, my painting techniques have been influenced from a mix of traditional atelier practices and pleinair painting techniques. While rooted in observational and figurative, my style incorporates contemporary techniques, blending traditional methods with modern sensibilities. I am inspired by artists such as Walter Sickert, Gwen John and Edouard Vuillard. I am also inspired by many current emerging/established artists that share the same motivation in painting. My painting style sits within observational and figurative, where the focus is on capturing an atmosphere and narration through my authentic observations.
In my pieces, I often explore scenes from everyday life, portraying landscapes, urbanscapes, or intimate moments. This approach allows me to highlight the beauty found in the mundane, celebrating the fleeting impressions created by changing lights and settings. I aim to evoke a sense of nostalgia and wonder, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own experiences through the narration of the paintings.
Within my painting, I search for atmosphere and narration through my individual observations and compositions. My paintings strive to capture the honest feelings by using my unique observations which helps convey and narrate the scene or subjects. My exploration is ever developing and are based on colour comparison on both values and tones to achieve likeness loosely. Within my paintings, I explore ways to represent what I observe through colour tones and values, brush marks and composition. I also focus on subtle tones and closeness in colour values.
I am truly grateful to everyone who has encouraged, inspired and motivated me in this painting journey.
A special thank you to my dear friends Elliot Roworth and Stephen Hawkins for introducing me to the techniques of plein air painting and for their constant encouragement. And to Max White for the continuous motivation and camaraderie that has made this art journey all the more meaningful.
